Newly arrived in The Waikato Environment Centre is the Sticky Beak range of handy garden tools with wooden Native beech handles, great to use if you suffer from a touch of arthritis. Use to grub flower beds or just general weeding, on its side as a cultivating tool or for sowing seeds to make a hollow line in soil. This has got to be the handiest garden tool…… and best of all this little beauty is made in New Zealand and has two longer versions so that you don’t need to bend!

WAIKATO REGIONAL COUNCIL- Community Initiative Fund
Please find attached an application form for another round of the Waikato Regional Council's Small Scale Community Initiative Fund.
The SSCIF is designed to support community and individual landowners by funding materials, up to the value of 5K, used in pest animal and plant pest control in ecological restoration projects. The criteria are broad enough to suit a range of projects and to allow repeat applications by groups for smaller grants. SSCIF projects will be driven solely by communities and individual landowners and will have minimal level of support from staff. Once groups are more established and if their projects require more resources, they have the option of applying to the Environmental Initiatives Fund (EIF). In the past the criteria prevented funding of contracted services as the focus was to support volunteer labour. This has changed to allow up to 1K to be applied for contracted labour to recognise the need for skills required to plan and undertake pest control that may not be available amongst a volunteer group. Applications for the fund have traditionally been opened in June and allocated in July each year. The fund has been consistently oversubscribed so council has agreed to double the funds made available.
The fund is also open to those with QEII covenants and those wanting to undertake work in areas identified by the Council as Significant Natural Areas (SNAs).
Be aware that if you have applied to the Department of Conservation's Waikato Community Conservation Fund you won't hear the outcome of this fund before the 20th February. You may choose to apply to the SSCIF as an additional option in case you miss out on funding through the DOC fund.
Applications for a further 75K of funds are open and close 20th Feb 2015.
Cheers Moira
