PLASTIC FREE JULY IS UNDERWAY!

A few words from Lisa from Eco Deals.......

Did you know that apart from the small amount that has been incinerated every piece of plastic ever made still exists in the world today? And that in the first 10 years of this century MORE plastic was produced than the entire last century! - eeek very, very sobering.

Something has to give which is why we are encouraging everyone to accept the Plastic Free July Challenge.

It is pretty simple: attempt to consume no single-use plastic during July. If all single-use plastic sounds a bit daunting, just try the “top five” Plastic Bags, Plastic Bottles, Plastic Straws, Plastic Cups and Clingfilm. Don't worry we will have heaps of tips and alternatives for you....go on....give it a go...we can't really afford not to.

IS THERE ANY INTEREST IN AN EDIBLE WEED WORKSHOP?

Would anyone be interested in attending an edible weed workshop with Julia Sich (the weed lady)?

this is her website link;http://www.juliasedibleweeds.com/

Message from Mikaere Peck 0212695872

Just attended her workshop in Tauranga last Sat 30 May 2015 and it was awesome. I learnt so much about weeds that has changed my whole way of thinking, even blackberry and gorse etc, how to use them, why they grow and how to get rid of them if you don't want them (without using poisons). The workshop costed $40.00 and you also receive Julia's ebook with that.

Julia is interested in doing a workshop in Waikato, around the Hamilton area somewhere and I'm willing to help her set that up. What we need is someone with a wild garden or a slightly out of control garden that has heaps of weeds growing. It could be a town garden, it doesn't necessarily have to be rural. As long as there are lots of weeds growing.

I'm just putting out some feelers at the moment to see if there is any interest from anyone in the Waikato area.

MATARIKI IN THE CITY SATURDAY 18TH JULY

To celebrate Matariki (the Maaori New Year) libraries have a free event Matariki in the City.

Matariki in the City will be on Saturday the 18th of July at Central Library and Garden Place. The event will start at 9am and finish at 3pm. Activities on the day include Manu Aute (kite making), the Cosmo Dome, storytelling, stage performances, face painting, finger nail painting, and tamoko stencils. The event will be a fun day suitable for the whole family. There is plenty of media attention and we expect this event to be well attended.

At this stage we are looking for market and food stalls (promotional stalls too). All stalls will be located in Garden Place site map to come. The cost is $32.90 for kai and market stalls (mobile food stalls must have permit otherwise it’s $95), promotional stalls are free. If you are interested in having a stall at our event please let me know as soon as you can. It would be great to have you at our event.

Thanks,

Aaron Martin Children's and Teens' Librarian, Te Kaiwhakatipu Taiohi
